Talk of the Town

Photobucket
You heard them boo in the NBA Draft a few years ago in 2008 when they had the number six overall pick and selected Danilo Gallinari out of Italy, now they're setting themselves up for an even bigger disappointment. New Yorkers woke up last Monday morning, only to find LeBron James on the front cover of the New York Post with a Knicks jersey on. The picture was photo shopped of coarse, but folks in the big apple like to think James will be donning a Knickerbockers uniform next season when he will officially be available on the market as a free agent. But if being in the spotlight of NYC wasn't attractive enough, maybe a cast of new young talent will attract the reigning MVP.

Nearing the NBA trade deadline, the Knicks have freed up tons of cap space and have created an environment fit for a king. Given LeBron goes by the moniker 'King James', if you could picture the six-time NBA All-Star anywhere away from his native Ohio, New York has got to be the place. If the Knicks were to acquire James, it would be likely he would be accompanied by another marquee free agent to be, such as Dwayne Wade or Chris Bosh. Then again chances are just as likely we can see both Bosh and Wade playing alongside one another at Madison Square Garden. Also, with T-Mac's recent comments about taking a pay cut to play next season in his new home of NY, don't rule McGrady out of the mix either. Either way you look at it, the Knicks organization has got to be feeling pretty confident they'll be in contention and have some winning product on the court come next season.

I know the 2009-2010 NBA season has just reached it's midway point, but the story of the offseason is going to be where James will call home in 2011. My guess is James will stay put in Cleveland, and I think that would be his best fit considering he made a team that was virtually nothing prior to his arrival, into a championship caliber team. But as we've all grown to know, expect the unexpected when it comes to sports. If sporting a Yankees hat at a Cleveland Indians playoff game wasn't a big enough hint, appearing on stage and kicking it with Jay-Z who just about runs New York, puts any doubt of James not playing in the big city to rest. Regardless, it's going to be just as talked about and almost as annoying as the offseason Brett Favre updates, minus the repetitive retirement rumors. Now if only the Knicks were the Yankees of basketball...

George Karl vs. Cancer, Round 2

Photobucket
Karl a tough customer -
If having to battle his way through the extremely competitive Western Conference wasn't enough, Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl will have to cope with another difficult battle, one that can strike when least expected and one that he's already won before. His opponent? -- Cancer. The Nuggets skipper is facing a familiar foe as he suffered from cancer in the past. But similar to the different style of opponents coach Karl faces on the hardwood, cancer attacks it's opponent from different areas depending on what type of disease the patient is diagnosed with. In 2005, it was confirmed that Karl had prostate cancer. And just five years later, he finds himself in a familiar situation, this time facing throat cancer.

Karl held a press conference earlier last week, where he announced he was diagnosed with treatable neck and throat cancer. Seen in the shadows of the background behind him, was his team. Although the gathering wasn't a pleasant one, seeing the heart broken faces of Carmelo and the rest of the Nuggets squad, gave you a heartwarming feeling that they're determined to win it all this year for the one they call coach. After breaking in tears behind the table in front of camera crews and media, Karl joked about it with a straight face. "I love a challenge", the 4-time NBA All-Star coach said. & There's no doubt cancer fits that description. While receiving treatment in Denver, Karl will miss a few games with assistant Adrian Dantley to fill in.

As of today, Karl's Nuggets (39-19) find themselves in 2nd place in the Western Conference, only 4.5 games behind a Los Angeles Lakers (44-15) squad in which they've defeated already twice this season. Karl hopes to be back with his team at full strength come playoff time.

Coach Karl, my prayers are with you and yours.

T-Mac to the Big Apple

Photobucket
When the New York Knicks made headlines prior to the NBA Trade Deadline earlier this week by obtaining Tracy McGrady in a three-team trade, many speculated they were acquiring what looked to be the ghost of T-Mac. But the Knicks had faith in the 13-year veteran and were in a win-win situation, hoping to get the All-Star side of McGrady and at the same time freeing up more than $9 million dollars in additional salary-cap space to use in free agency this summer. However, after T-Mac's 26-point debut, the Knicks look to have gotten the 7-time All-Star they desired. And not even 24 hours after arriving in New York, McGrady said money wouldn't be an issue for a new deal, if the Knicks decided to dish him an offer after this season.

McGrady who's been labeled as one of the league's premiere players, hasn't lived up to his $22 mil. per year contract, as injuries have gotten the better half of him. But if he's willing to take a discount to play in New York next season, he could be a part of a Knicks squad that looks to be in the sweepstakes for some of the best players in the league as LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade will all be on the market once the season is over. The Houston Rockets and Sacramento Kings were the other two teams involved in the trade. Kevin Martin (Hou.), Hilton Armstrong (Hou.), Jordan Hill (Hou.), Jared Jeffries (Hou.), Carl Landry (Sac.), Joey Dorsey (Sac.), Larry Hughes (Sac.) and Sergio Rodriguez (NY) all found new homes in the result of the trade.

Woe Canada!

Photobucket
One night before the 30th anniversary of the "Miracle on Ice" when Team USA did the unthinkable by defeating the highly favored Soviet Union in the Winter Olympics of 1980, the US pulls off their biggest upset since. In a game against their northern neighbor, team USA shocked not only the team, but the entire country of Canada by beating them 5-3. Heading into Sunday's game between the US and Canada, hockey was the one thing on all Canadians minds in terms of gold medals. But after the upset loss, the road to glory will be anything but simple for the Canucks. With one surprise already under their belt, team USA isn't stopping there, as they're now seeking bigger and better things such as a gold medal.

For the US, the 5-3 victory over the hosting country, was their first win over Canada since 1960. Much thanks came from Red Wings defenseman Brian Rafalski who scored two goals in the game and had a hat trick taken away from him after the team's 4th goal was later ruled an assist, as the puck was deflected off the skate of teammate Jamie Langenbrunner, just before reaching the net. Rifalski who has caught fire as of late, now has 4 goals (all in the last 2 games), tying him with Canada's Dany Heatley for the tournament lead. An open net goal off the stick of Ryan Kesler sealed the win for the Americans, improving their record to an undefeated mark of 3-0. Goalie Ryan Miller who played a spectacular game in front of the net, finished the game with 42 saves opposed to the combined total of 24 saves he had in the team's previous two games. His counterpart -- Martin Brodeur, who recently set the record for the most games played and career wins in the NHL, took the loss for team Canada. The New Jersey Devils' goaltender has already taken some criticism and is being bombarded with the blame not even 24 hours after the game.

Although it isn't the end of Canada's quest for a gold medal, it's one of the bigger upsets and can't sit well with the Canadian fans. After all, they did invent the sport. But with expectations higher than the ceiling, team Canada has got to be the least bit worried. Team USA exposed them in last night's game and proved that not even Canada's golden boy -- Sidney Crosby would be able to lead them to the promise land alone. It won't be a cake walk for the Americans either, as they face the winner of Belarus vs. Switzerland in the next round. But how sweet would it be to pay homage to the Miracle that struck 30-years ago this day, than to bring home a gold medal in hockey of all sports. Hats off to this guy!
Photobucket
Noteworthy: Canadian goalie Martin Brodeur will be replaced by Vancouver's very own -- Roberto Luongo of the Cannucks in their next game against Germany.

Bling-Bling!

Photobucket
File this one under a case of ridiculousness. Despite being a mediocre ballplayer at best, Boston Celtics' guard Marquis Daniels' new bling would have you thinking otherwise. Although the undrafted Daniels had a respected basketball career at the University of Auburn, his presence at the NBA level is yet to be seen. The 6-foot 6-inch guard who served two separate 3-year tenures with both the Dallas Mavericks and the Indiana Pacers, recently had a chain customized in a way that only he can. That's unless you want a chain of someone else around your neck and can afford it of coarse. Similar to hip-hop mogul Rick Ross, Daniels had a replica of his own face made into a necklace. The 2.9 pound neck piece is made of 1,300 grams of 14-karat gold and is smothered in white and cognac diamonds. All ingredients to a recipe that has to have cost the 7-year veteran a fortune. And with skills like his, I'm wondering how Daniels was able to afford all of this. Then again, when he's not out at his day job, trying to earn playing time on the hardwood, Daniels is putting in work in the rap industry with such artists as Gucci Mane and Lil' Boosie. Now it all makes sense!

NBA All-Star Weekend An Epic Fail?

Photobucket
The peculiar snowy weather in Dallas didn't prevent fans from flocking to this year's All-Star game. Instead, it encouraged them to seek shelter and catch the game live and direct, as Cowboy stadium hosted what has become the largest All-Star game in recent memory. Sure NBA All-Star weekend in my home town of Las Vegas was a weekend to remember, but it failed to set a record for attendance as 108,713 fans packed Cowboys stadium. Despite the record setting attendance mark and the game that came down to the final seconds with the Eastern Conference coming out on top by a field goal, the rest of the All-Star weekend would be better off if it was forgotten. The second year installment of the H-O-R-S-E competition failed to excite fans and instead was cut short due to the countless number of missed shot attempts. It concluded with Kevin Durant winning the event for the second straight year. However, the game of H-O-R-S-E wasn't the only fail. The Sprite Slam Dunk Contest which usually takes the cake, ended up being a major flop.

With all the hype about Laker guard Shannon Brown heading into the contest, one would think he would pull a rabbit out of a hat while in the air and somehow still manage to dunk the ball in the basket. Nevertheless, that wasn't the case. New York Knicks' Nate Robinson left the arena with the hardware for the third time, making him the only slam dunk contestant to win the event on three separate occasions. In my opinion, the only thing that helps make Kryptonate's dunks appealing, is his size. It's not everyday that you see someone at his stature (5 ft 6 in) dunk a ball. But it didn't stop this year's dunk contest from being by far the worse they've had (correct me if I'm wrong). It's clear that creativity has become a problem. Both the Three-Point Shootout and Skills Challenge entertained us as usual with Boston's Paul Peirce and Phoenix's Steve Nash winning respectively, but the game itself was undoubtedly the highlight of the entire weekend. With Kobe out and missing the opportunity to defend his All-Star MVP award, the East defeated the West by a high score of 141-139. Miami Heat star guard Dwayne Wade took home MVP honors.

One highlight that I'm sad to admit I missed, was the half-time performance that both Alicia Keys and Shakira put on. But unless the two performed a make-out scene, I don't think the weekend as a whole lived up to the words of Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. Prior to the 2010 All-Star weekend and after Superbowl XLIV, Cuban went as far as saying, "This year's All-Star game is going to make the Superbowl look like a bar mitzvah." For those of you who don't know what that is, look it up! That alone rose the bar and put the event on top of a pedestal in an all or nothing situation. & If you ask me, I don't think anyone would disagree that the Superbowl came out as the winner. Do you think this year's NBA ASG lived up to expectations? & If not, what could be done to help improve All-Star weekend? A friend of mine suggested that they might as well add '21' and 'knockout' to the list of events, however, he forgot to mention one of my favorites, 'around the world!'

Jamison A No-Show in Cavs Debut

Photobucket
Friday night seen the Cleveland Cavaliers who own the best record in the NBA, fall to a mediocre Charlotte Bobcats team. Entering the game, Charlotte owned a record of 26-26. But despite the .500 record, the Bobcats have been notorious for matching up well and defeating the league's more premier teams, as they've gave the world champion Lakers trouble time and time again for the past three seasons or so. However, the biggest disappointment regarding the Cavaliers 110-93 loss, was the performance of their newest acquisition -- Antawn Jamison. Jamison, who was acquired in a three-team, six-player trade just three days ago made his Cavs debut in his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina. The former Tar Heel had a disappointing debut to say the least, shooting 0 for 12 from the field. Jamison finished the game with 2-points, both coming from the charity stripes.

Prior to Friday night's game, Jamison was said to be the missing piece to Cleveland's puzzle, as many speculated he would help push the team over the hump and solidify them as the sole favorites to win the East and contend for the NBA Finals. Although things aren't looking too good after one game in his new Cavs uniform, there's no need to push the panic button just yet as the 2-time All-Star will have a chance to redeem himself tomorrow afternoon as LeBron and the Cavs take a visit to Florida to face the defending Eastern Conference champion Orlando Magic in a rematch of last year's Eastern Conference Finals. The game will serve as one half of ABC's Sunday afternoon basketball, with Boston at Denver for game 2.

Throwback Thursday x The Big Hurt

Photobucket
As promised in one of my earlier posts -- 'Glavine Call It A Career', this edition of Throwback Thursday is dedicated to former White Sox slugger Frank Thomas who announced his retirement just one day after Tom Glavine announced his. & Similar to Mr. Glavine, Frank Thomas was one of the best players at his position during the mid 90's to early 2000's. Growing up as a teenager, Thomas served on his high school's football, baseball and basketball team and became a star athlete in each academic. With baseball as his number one sport of choice, Thomas was saddened after not being drafted in the 1986 amateur draft, resulting in him accepting a scholarship to play football at Auburn University. In college, Thomas later joined the baseball team where he led the team in RBI's as a freshmen, earning him a spot on the U.S. Pan American team. However, with football season getting the better half of Thomas, he would leave the Pan Am team.

Back on the football field, Thomas would suffer injuries early on in the season. These injuries would keep Thomas away from football for some time and baseball once again became his sole sport, where he went on to earn Southeastern Conference MVP honors his senior year. Thomas would also set a school record of 49 career college home runs. With an impressive college career on his resume, Thomas was sure he would get selected this time around and sure enough, the Chicago White Sox selected him as the 7th overall pick in the first round of the 1989 MLB Draft. With the selection, Thomas would serve a 16-year stint in the south side of Chicago where he would become an instant fan favorite. Thomas would 'hurt' the ball with his powerful swing and long home runs, thus leading to the moniker he was given by longtime White Sox broadcaster Ken Harrelson -- "The Big Hurt".

In his first full season, in 1991, Thomas finished third in MVP voting. Even though he didn't win MVP honors that year, he did manage to win his first of four Silver Slugger awards. However, Thomas would win back-to-back MVP tittles in 1993 and '94, becoming the first White Sox to do so since Dick Allen in 1972 and one of only three first basemen in history to win consecutive MVP awards in the majors (Jimmie Foxx and Albert Pujols, are the others). Thomas would prove to be one of the more consistent and prolific ball players of his time, finishing in the top 10 of MVP voting every year from 1991-1997. As Thomas' numbers slightly diminished during his final years in Chicago, the White Sox decided to take a different route, creating an ongoing feud between both he and the front-office. Thomas felt he was unappreciated when being let go and not receiving a phone call after a 16 year relationship with the franchise.

The Big Hurt then signed with the Oakland Athletics in 2006, as their everyday DH. In his first game against his former team, Thomas was greeted by the Chicago fans with a thunderous applause while leading off the second inning. Moments later, Thomas would hit his first of two home runs on the night. The crowd would react with a standing ovation. Thomas would rejuvenate his career in Oakland, logging 39 HR's and 119 RBI's and played a vital role in the A's playoff stretch. During their first postseason game, Thomas would hit two solo home runs against the Minnesota Twins, making him the oldest player to hit multiple home runs in a postseason game. Despite his brilliant year, Thomas would come up short for the AL Comeback Player of the Year Award, finishing second behind the man who replaced him in Chicago, Jim Thome. Thomas would also finish 4th in the voting for the AL MVP.

After his rebounding year in Oakland, the Toronto Blue Jays signed The Big Hurt to a 2-year deal worth $18 million. As a Blue Jay, Thomas would go on to hit his 496th career home run, his 244th long ball as a DH, breaking the record previously held by Seattle's Edgar Martinez. Thomas' biggest home run would come less than two weeks later, as he hit his 500th career home run, becoming the 21st player in Major League history to do so. Thomas would once again come to bad terms within the team's staff, this time with the manager. Before a game in early April, manager John Gibbons announced he would be benching Thomas for an undisclosed period of time. After being released by the Blue Jays just one day after being benched, the angry veteran then found his way back in Oakland, just four days after his departure. Thomas' second stint with the A's would be his final season in a big league uniform as he struggled at the plate and served time on the disabled list.

Although he wasn't the slimmest guy on the baseball field, Thomas had a steady diet of homers, having belted a total of 521 long balls in his 19-year career. The 5-time All-Star owns a handful of White-Sox records and is the team's all-time leader in categories such as: runs scored (1,327), home runs (448), doubles (447), RBI (1,465), extra-base hits (906), walks (1,466), total bases (3,949), slugging percentage (.568), and on-base percentage (.427). Despite not being on the postseason roster due to injury, Thomas does have a World Series ring under his belt from the 2005 season when the White Sox overcame a drought of 46 years without a World Series Championship by sweeping the Houston Astros.

Now that The Big Hurt has concluded his career, the next destination on the list is a no brainer -- Cooperstown. The only question remains is the one everyone asks, is he first ballot material? & If you ask me, I'd have to say all signs point to yes. After all, the big guy is only one of a few players in an elite group of ball players. There are only six other players in history who have both hit more home runs and have a higher career batting average than Thomas: Hank Aaron, Jimmie Foxx, Babe Ruth, Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez and The Say Hey Kid - Willie Mays. All of which are current or future Hall of Famers, might I add.

Oh & I almost forgot, it doesn't hurt (no pun intended) to have your own video game out either!

Silent No More

Photobucket
Tiger set to break his Silence - As if the Tiger Woods story hasn't already been blown out of proportion and received enough media attention, the latest news regarding Woods and his future will be announced tomorrow morning. The 10-time PGA Player of the Year has been in a sex rehab clinic for the past month or so and is scheduled to speak in public for the first time in nearly three months when the incident first occurred. Woods plans to hold a press conference where he will be releasing a public statement, however, I'm not sure 'press conference' is what you want to call it considering there will be no questions asked. And instead of the usual writers, journalists, reporters and cameras packing the conference room like sardines, it'll be a much different atmosphere, as only friends, family and colleagues are said to be invited. Also in attendance will be the three major network camera crews that plan to give coverage on the whole thing. So if you don't wake up early enough for the live conference (like myself), there's no question it'll be talked about on every other channel for the next 2-4 weeks.

Along with his wife Elin, Tiger has taken some unfair punishment from the tabloids and media. Punishment that hasn't been seen before, aimed at one individual as far as celebrity scandals go. & Although it's unknown what Woods has to say, other than the obvious -- "I'm sorry", it'll be interesting if he reveals when he plans to return to the golf course. It's clear that both the Tour and sport of golf need Tiger more than he needs them. But after all, if there's anyway to regain the popularity that he's lost through out this entire episode, it's making a return to the green. & To be honest, I haven't been this excited to hear from Tiger since Dave Chappelle's Racial Draft took place. "Goodbye friend rice, hello fried chicken!"

Glavine Calls It A Career

Photobucket
As the first stage of baseball season surfaces with pitchers and catchers reporting to camp, one hurler that won't be making the trip to spring training this season is 21-year veteran Tom Glavine. The 2-time Cy Young Award winner who turns 44 in March, hasn't played ball since the 2008 season when he made his final appearance in August of '08. With a year off the baseball diamond, the absence helped Glavine's decision to hang it up a bit easier. & Although he hinted about retiring months ago after his final game, it finally became official just last week. The 10-time All-Star who broke through in the Majors with the Braves in 1987 is one of only 24 pitchers in Major League history to reach the 300-win milestone and one of just six lefties in the 300-win club.

With 164 of his 305 career victories during the 1990's, Glavine was the second winningest pitcher in the National League, only behind Greg Maddux, who Glavine shared a clubhouse with for 9-years (1993-2002). But before Glavine enjoyed fortune in the 90's, the former World Series MVP would have his fair share of down years from 1987-90 where he compiled a record of 33-43, including a 17-loss season in '88. However, that all began to change just years later as Glavine went on to win 20-games in three consecutive seasons from 1991-93. Glavine served a 4-year tenure with the New York Mets from 2003-07 before returning back to Atlanta for the '08 season.

Along with Randy Johnson who just won his 300th career game as recent as last season with the San Francisco Giants, both Glavine and Johnson are the last of a dying breed, as pitchers become less likely to reach the 300-win plateau nowadays. But now that Tommy's playing career is over, we begin to wait and see if Mr. Glavine can make it into Cooperstown as a first ballot Hall of Famer when he is eligible for induction in 5 years. Another fan favorite and likely Hall of Fame candidate who has decided to call it quits, is Frank Thomas. The hefty slugger who belted over 500 homers will be better mentioned in this week's edition of Throwback Thursday, so STAY TUNED!

For more on Tommy Glavine and an older story regarding the 300-game winner, check out Throwback Thursday x Triple Trouble.

Durant's Gone Streaking

Photobucket
When the Seattle SuperSonics drafted Kevin Durant as the 2nd overall pick in 2007 from the University of Texas, they were confident they had a winner. And after capturing the Rookie of the Year award in his first year, the future looked bright for both Durant and the Sonics. But after only one season in Seattle, the team would relocate to Oklahoma as the Oklahoma City Thunder. Although the team changed its name and location, Durant's skills only grew. With a rebuilding playoff team in the making, the newly named 'Oklahoma City Thunder' were said to be possible playoff contenders in 2011 at the earliest. However, at the 2010 All-Star break, the Thunder have surprised many and find themselves one year ahead of schedule and in sole possession of 5th place in the Western Conference standings (31-21).

It's hard to label an entire squad a 'one man team' when they have a winning record, but scoring nearly 30 points a night can go a long way. The young star is averaging 29.7 points per game and ranks second in the league, only behind LeBron James' 29.9 PPG. One stat Durant does hold, is his league leading streak of 25 points or more in 26 straight games. The 25+ point consecutive game streak isn't expected to win him the MVP award this year alone, but if he keeps it up and his team holds its way into the playoffs this year, Durant could be a likely candidate and could state a debatable case for the MVP award. If there was a mid-season award given to the MVP of the first half of the season, it would be a coin toss between LeBron & Durant, with Kobe & Carmelo injured. In only his 3rd NBA season, the guy has already developed into one of the games premiere ball players and at the early age of 21, the sky is the limit for the young 'Durantchula'.

Rex Ryan Part III x Rexy so Sexy

Photobucket
As if enough fun hasn't already been poked at Rex Ryan's weight in the past, the latest pictures and footage of Ryan's Buddha belly seen at a hockey game earlier this week will surely have you disgusted and possibly a bit curious. The New York Jets head coach was spotted at a Panthers-Hurricanes game wearing a Flyers jersey, until the 'Canes Ice-Girls assisted him with a brand new Hurricanes jersey. For a minute I thought Ryan was gonna pull the unthinkable by putting on a show for the home crowd and doing the 'truffle shuffle'. Instead, he provided us with an image that will scar for life.

Ryan is a walking example of why it's important to work out regularly and eat healthy even at an elderly age, unless you're trying out to be a sumo wrestler of coarse. Although his invite to the Nathan's hot dog eating contest was terminated along with his team, it looks like the loss might have done him some justice, as the contest Ryan should now look into is NBC's The Biggest Loser or perhaps VH1's Celebrity Fit Club. & With 3-years left on his contract in the big apple, it'll be interesting to see if Ryan even attempts to slim down a bit. At the rate he's currently at, Ryan might outweigh his entire offensive line and I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being the first head coach with a snack bar on the sidelines.

Superman My Ass

Photobucket
Will the real Superman please stand up -
For years now, NBA super star Shaquille O'Neal has been known by a number of different aliases throughout his career. Shaq, The Big Shaqtus, Shaq Diesel and Superman are all monikers the former NBA MVP has gone by. He even has a 'Superman' tattoo to prove it. However, a rising star by the name of Dwight Howard has also recently been dubbed the nickname "Superman", most notably for the show he put on during the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest in 2008. Prior to one of his dunk attempts, the 7-footer put on a cape from a Superman costume and revealed a shirt with the iconic Superman "S" logo from under his jersey. Although he threw the ball in instead of dunking it, he still went on to be crowned the Slam Dunk winner and has since been referred to as 'Superman'.

Following Thursday night's 115-106 win over the defending Eastern Conference Champion Orlando Magic, Cleveland Cavaliers center Shaquille O'Neal was a bit angered that he was getting doubled-teamed, even after not doubling up on Howard. In a post-game interview, Shaq had a few unfriendly words to say regarding the newly named 'Superman'. "Superman my ass. When I was coming up and there was Ewing and Hakeem, I never doubled anybody. You tell me who the real Superman is. Don’t compare me to anybody. I’d rather not be mentioned. I’m offended. Hakeem, Ewing, Rik Smits, Duncan, Robinson, the best of the best, straight up. I never doubled nobody.”

Dwight on the other hand says he doesn't want any beef with the 18-year veteran and I can't blame him. On Saturday night, Howard was on hand in Dallas to help commentate the All-Star events alongside the cast of TNT's 'Inside the NBA'. & With Charles Barkley behind the mic, you already knew trouble was brewing. Prior to the NBA All-Star Skills Challenge, Barkley tried instigating the incident by asking Howard what he was going to do about it, hoping to add fuel to the fire. Howard simply responded, "I'm not going to do anything, Shaq's like 50 years old." Howard also said he didn't know anyone referred to Shaq as 'Superman' and said he'll change his nickname.

If you ask me, I think Shaq's just trying to get to Dwight's head, hoping to create mind games. Mind games that would effect what looks to be a preview and rematch of the Eastern Conference Finals. When the two teams faced off last year in the playoffs, the Cavs were unable to contain the talented Howard with the likes of Anderson Varejao and Big Z. But with the addition of Shaq during this past offseason, the team addressed the one position they needed most help in, in hopes of keeping Dwight Howard to a minimum. Using Shaq as a weapon both physically and psychologically could be the deciding factor come playoff time. However, it's unlikely that the 24 year old will let any further comments effect him like this one has.

As far as the nickname goes, I think it's all gone too far. & As dominant of a player Shaq was during his earlier years with the Lakers, it's pretty clear that 'Superman' has found his 'Kryptonite', and that is his age. With that being said, I think it's time to pass the torch.
Who do you think dons the cape?

Warren Sapp Arrested

Photobucket
One Night Stand -
What's worse than waking up with herpes the next morning after a one night stand you ask? Well nothing really, but this is pretty close. Prior to Superbowl XLIV last Sunday, former NFL defensive tackle Warren Sapp was arrested and charged with domestic battery for allegedly chocking a women in his hotel. After a night of partying at the hotel, the victim asked Sapp for his room key when she grew tired. According to her, Sapp woke her up and the two began to argue. The argument then escalated to Sapp grabbing the woman by her neck and tossing her onto a couch, with a swollen knee and bruised back to show for.

As usual, Sapp's side of the story told a different tale. Sapp told investigators he asked the victim to leave hours earlier and she refused. He also went on to say that the woman had fallen off a couch when he tried helping her up, which led to her injuries. Sapp, who played 12 years in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from (1995-2003) and most recently with the Oakland Raiders (2004-07) was currently working as an analyst on NFL Network and was scheduled to help provide coverage for the big game on Sunday. But following the arrest, an NFL spokesman said the Florida native would not appear.

As dominant of a player Sapp was during his playing career, his extreme behavior has often gotten the better half of him and has resulted in trouble from time to time. & His size advantage doesn't seem to help his cause whether or not all allegations of this recent incident are true. However, the intimidating Sapp hasn't always been known for his bad guy image. In fact, he's also been known for having some fun, being a guest/participant on both Dancing with the Stars and Nick Cannon's Wild 'N Out. But with the recent incident in the news, it'll be interesting to see whether or not it'll cost him his job as an NFL analyst. Sapp played a vital role in the Buccaneers defense and helped contribute to their first Superbowl tittle in Bucs franchise history in 2002. The former NFL Defensive Player of the Year (1999), is a 7-time Pro-Bowler.

No Kobe, No Problem

Photobucket
With Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant battling injuries all season long, the star guard has decided it's time to get some rest. Having already suffered both finger and back injuries this season, his latest injury is the one that has kept him sidelined the past three games. During last week's game against the visiting Charlotte Bobcats, Kobe was seen grabbing his ankle after teammate Lamar Odom came down on Bryant's foot. Kobe was unable to finish the game and made his way to the locker room where he received treatment. The aggravated left ankle was first sprained two weeks ago in a match against the Philadelphia 76ers. Kobe's last game came in a loss to Denver in which he registered 33 points to go along with 9 rebounds. To make matters worse, the team has also been without it's star center- Andrew Bynum who is treating a bruised right hip.

However, even without two of it's key components, the team has performed well enough to win all three games since the injuries occurred. One of them including a win against the Portland Trail Blazers in the Rose Garden. Something Kobe hasn't accomplished in his last nine tries, dating back to the 2005 season. Even though it's only been three games, the Lakers have shown just how much depth the team truly has. Both Jordan Farmar and Sasha Vujacic have contributed well when needed & although the team may not be 100% stoked, they have to be the least bit happy that they've been able to prove they can compete even without the league's best player.

Missing three games due to injury midway through the season might not be the biggest news, but for Kobe it means headlines. The 2007-08 NBA MVP hasn't missed a game since March 7th of 2007 when he served a suspension. But if you want to know the last game Kobe missed with an injury, you would have to go back to December 8th of 2006. The biggest bummer regarding the injury, is that it will keep Bryant from participating in this year's NBA All-Star Game. The event that is taking place this weekend isn't just your normal All-Star Game. In fact, it's projected to be the biggest All-Star Game to ever be played. The choice of venue is that none other than the newly built Cowboys Stadium which opened it's doors this past NFL season. The arena seats 80,000 fans and includes the world's largest high-definition television screen hoisted above the playing field (in this case, court).

You would think Kobe, the defending All-Star co-MVP (also shared by Shaquille O'Neal) wouldn't miss the game for anything in the world, but at the same time you have to respect the decision made by Bryant, granted, trying to win back-to-back NBA tittles might be just a little bit more important than an exhibition game for the fans. His absence also means we'll have to wait another year to see if Kobe can tie the record for the most All-Star Game MVP's (4), Bryant currently has 3. Now that Kobe's ASG status is official, it'll be interesting to see if he still comes out for a cameo during the Sprite Slam Dunk contest. Laker guard and fellow teammate Shannon Brown has said in a recent interview that Kobe was going to help assist the Slam-Dunk participant in this year's event.

Taking the place of Bryant on the Western Conference All-Star roster, will be Dallas' very own - Jason Kidd. Also making the news is 76ers guard Allen Iverson. Iverson who was voted on by the fans and named to the roster for the Eastern Conference All-Star squad, is scheduled to miss the game due to "personal reasons." But if you ask me, I think those "personal reasons" are actually Iverson coming to terms with reality. The All-Star game has been better known as a popularity contest, and is the exact reason why A.I. is ahead of the competition in terms of fans voting. Not to mention, the playing time Iverson missed this season. Iverson has been one of the league's best players in this past decade, but it's almost clear that his better days are well behind him. Stepping in for the former Rookie of the Year and NBA MVP, is New York Knicks center - David Lee. Lee, a well deserved All-Star candidate has recorded 30 double-doubles on the season and will be making his first NBA All-Star appearance. For Kidd, this year's ASG will be his 10th.

Manning's Legacy Takes A Blow

Photobucket
As Drew Brees & company are busy celebrating in Disney World and on rafters in what's said to be the biggest celebration in New Orleans parade history, Colts QB Peyton Manning is taking some heavy fire for not shaking hands after Sunday's big game. Instead of congratulating the better team and showing his sportsmanship, Manning was seen walking off the field with his head down. We seen the same thing last year in the NBA, when Cleveland Cavaliers star guard LeBron James decided to hit the showers instead of shaking hands with the eventual Eastern Conference Champion - Orlando Magic, at the result of his team being knocked out the playoffs. James was later fined for not addressing the media. Although James' actions were a bit unsportsmanlike, you would expect that from a young player. But as for Peyton, you would think the league's "best player" and the so called "greatest QB's of all-time" would lead by example.

What shocks me most, is that with all the pregame bonding with one another, a post game handshake would have been the least to expect. Especially given the great show of respect the two have for each other and relationship between both Brees & Manning. One of Manning's favorite targets - WR Reggie Wayne was also seen heading to the locker room without congratulating those who won. Although they may have let everyone who bet on them down, Las Vegas casinos already have them labeled as the favorites to win it all next season. Something else the Colts probably feel they let down is their fan base. A mere 11 fans showed up to show their support and greet the AFC Champion Colts once they landed at an Indianapolis air-port. Someone else who has to feel pretty dumb, is former head coach Tony Dungy who predicted the Colts to win it in a landslide and said, "I'd be surprised if it was a close game."

But the biggest blow regarding the Colts' defeat, is that of Peyton Manning's legacy. The aforementioned "greatest QB of all-time" finds himself 1-1 in Superbowl play. The record 4-time league MVP also finds himself two rings behind rival Tom Brady and one behind Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger. Although he still owns a respected record of .500 on Superbowl Sunday, the loss puts Joe Montana's perfect Superbowl record of 4-4 out of reach. & A mediocre playoff record of 9-9 doesn't seem to help much either. The usual clutch Peyton Manning was anything but that last Sunday and in my eyes unless he wins back-to-back tittles here pretty soon, the talk of him being the "G.O.A.T." should remain in front of Mr. Montana's name. With Manning on the losing end and a Lombardi Trophy now under Drew Brees' belt, many are beginning to ask, "who will be the first to win their second Superbowl ring, Manning or Brees?" Let the discussion begin!

The Lane Kiffin Sewage Center

Photobucket
Although the news of former Tennessee Vols head coach Lane Kiffin leaving the school is a bit old, some fans still aren't taking it lightly and are instead taking it pretty personal. One fan in particular is letting Kiffin along with everyone else in Tennessee know exactly how he feels. The angered fan went as far as filing paperwork and proposing a name to the city's sewage center. A Knoxville attorney by the name of Drew McElroy contacted the City Council's Public Properties and Facilities Naming Committee about renaming it's local waste water plant after the short tenured coach.

After just one year at the helm, Kiffin's Vols finished the season with a record of 7-6. & Even after his departure, you've got to wonder what it is that the Tennessee faithful hate so much about Kiffin. After all, it was his players that didn't perform the way they were supposed to. But at the same time you've got to feel the rage held by the fans, after their coach for what was scheduled to be six-years decided to go elsewhere. Even though the proposed name is most likely to be denied, there's no denying the hard feelings that are being felt in Tennessee. Regarding the situation, the man with the play -- Drew McElroy went on to say, "We want to memorialize his stay here and I think this would be doing it appropriately." Although he's probably not welcomed back in the state, I'm sure Kiffin could care less as he finally has his dream job and is now in charge of one of the best football programs in the country.

Superbowl XLIV, Saints 31 - Colts 17

Photobucket
Mardi Gras comes early -
After 43 years in the making, the New Orleans Saints win their first Superbowl in franchise history by not only defeating, but by upsetting the highly favored Indianapolis Colts by a final score of 31 to 17. Looking at the final score, one would think the Saints dominated the entire game, but that couldn't have been any further from the truth. As the Saints looked a bit sluggish on both offense and defense to start the game, it was the Colts who drew first blood. After a field-goal on their first drive of the game, Peyton Manning would then lead his offense on a 96-yard touchdown drive, tying the 1985 Chicago Bears for the longest in Superbowl history. With an early ten point deficit heading into the second quarter, the Saints would finish the half by scoring 6 of their own, inching closer to a 10-6 score.

The second half would tell a different story as a huge momentum changer would shift the tone of the game in New Orleans' favor. On the opening kick-off of the second half, the Saints showed a bit of trickery by risking an on-side kick. Fortunately after the minute-long dog pile of players fighting for the ball, it was a success as the Saints would recover and score on a Pierre Thomas catch-and-run touchdown 16-yards out, just six plays later, giving them their first lead of the game. The risky kick was also the first ever on-side kick in a Superbowl, prior to the fourth quarter. It also proved to be one of the biggest plays of the game. The only show of life the Colts would have in the second half, would come in Indianapolis' next drive. With a 4-yard touchdown run by RB Joseph Addai, the Colts would regain the lead, but not for long.

The Saints would bounce back with a 47-yard field-goal on their next drive to trail within one. With the field-goal, the Saints' Garrett Hartley became the first kicker in Superbowl history to make three FG's from 40+ yards(46, 44 and 47). Colts kicker Matt Stover who set a feat of his own by becoming the oldest player in a Superbowl at 42 years of age, would try to one-up Hartley in the fourth quarter by kicking a 51-yarder that swung wide left, keeping it a one-point game. The rest of the game would be all Brees who overcame a slow start and tied a Superbowl record of 32 completions, also held by New England's Tom Brady. Brees' last completion would be a 2-yard touchdown pass to WR Jeremy Shockey, giving them a lead they would maintain for the remainder of the game. After the touchdown, the Saints would convert on a reviewed 2-point conversion that was first called no good before being overturned. With the extra two-points, their lead would improve to seven.

With all the pressure in the world now on Peyton Manning, the future Hall of Famer would have just a little over five minutes to march his team down the field to tie the game and possibly win his second Superbowl ring in four years. However, the Saints defense never got that memo. With 3:12 remaining in the game, Saints CB Tracy Porter read Manning perfectly and stepped in front of WR Reggie Wayne, intercepting the ball and returning it 74-yards for a touchdown. The pick-six put New Orleans up by 14 and in route to the city's first ever Superbowl title. Manning would then get one last chance to cut the deficit, but a very catch-able short pass that was dropped in the end-zone by Reggie Wayne sealed the deal as the Colts turned the ball over on downs, resulting in Drew Brees kneeling for the final play of the game with the final seconds ticking away.

After confetti and photographers covered the field, Saints head coach Sean Payton received a Gatorade bath before being lifted on the team's shoulders like a true hero. & For the city of New Orleans, he is a hero with Drew Brees as his sidekick. Combined the two have helped resurrect a city that was once upon a time underwater and in dire need of salvation. & Just four years later, the Saints help reunite those that decided to leave the city with those who stayed by bringing back something the city had missed and lost, their pride. Saints free safety Darren Sharper said it best, "This thing belongs to the people, we're just bringing it back to them." & With the team's parade scheduled to be held tomorrow afternoon and Mardi Gras right around the corner, you better believe the city of New Orleans will be restless and Bourbon street will be bumping for what looks to be a month-long celebration.

One of the more touching moments in recent Superbowl history happened to be after the game, when Saints QB & Superbowl MVP Drew Brees was seen holding and kissing his son during the team's celebration, creating a priceless father-son moment for the ages. Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints on becoming Superbowl Champions. With that being said, Let the party begin!
Photobucket
Noteworthy: The Saints overcame a 10-point deficit to tie the largest comeback win in Superbowl history. The Colts running game was held to under 100 yards, finishing with 99 total rushing yards. With the win, the Saints became the 8th team in NFL history to win it all in their first ever Superbowl appearance. With 106.5 million viewers tuned in around the country to watch the Saints win their first Superbowl in franchise history, Superbowl XLIV became the most watched event in tv history, surpassing the final episode of M*A*S*H back in 1983.

Seize the Day

Photobucket
Superbowl XLIV, Party of 2 -
The table is set for the 45th Superbowl in NFL history, with the two teams that dominated the league throughout the regular season. The game between the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts will be the first in which both number one seeded teams will meet in the big game since 1993 when the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills met in Superbowl XXVII. Although the match-up between two future Hall of Famers -- Brett Favre & Peyton Manning was the one everyone wanted to see, with Drew Brees in substitution of Favre, the of him and Manning could be just as entertaining if not more. Both QB's are a perfect ingredient for what could be a very high scoring affair.

As much as I'd like to see the Saints come out on top, I think it'll be the Colts who come out victorious. But there's no doubt the Saints are more deserving of the Lombardi trophy. Not only because it'll be their first ever Superbowl victory, but because the citizens of New Orleans have relied heavily on the team to help rebuild their city and ease the pain on those in devastation since hurricane Katrina hit the city in 2005. How big is the game for the city of N.O. you say? The city is set to close both schools and courts for the big game. That alone tells you how important this game is and how loyal their fans truly are.

As an underdog, the Saints won't have as much pressure on them and their main key of the game is to get to Manning. The Colts key is not much different, as they'll try to hurry one of the more accurate QB's the game has ever seen in Drew Brees. But without a completely healthy Dwight Freeney for the Colts defensive end, the team will have to pick up some pieces and the window of opportunity will have to open for someone else to step up. Freeney, who injured his ankle in practice earlier this week could be a huge relief for the Saints offensive line. But although his current status is a game-time decision, but I don't think he'll miss playing in the Superbowl for anything! Go Saints!

Throwback Thursday x Phil Jackson

Photobucket
A Success-Phil career -
This edition of Throwback Thursday, we take a look back at the career of current L.A. Lakers head coach Phil Jackson. Jackson, who's better known as a coach, also served his time as a player. Starting his career with the New York Knicks in 1967, Jackson became a fan favorite coming off the bench. Although he wasn't a huge role player for the Knicks' championship run in 1970 and '73, he became well known for his defensive play. Jackson would finish his playing career with the New Jersey Nets where he played for two seasons before retiring in 1980. Although the 6 ft 8 in forward had a decent go around on the hardwood, it wasn't long before his winning reputation as a coach came along. But it wasn't as easy as one would think. Before landing the head coaching job with the Chicago Bulls, many team's turned Jackson down when seeking a job as a coach. Little did they know that P-Jax would later become one of the greatest to ever draw up plays.

Jackson became the brains behind the operation, utilizing the triangle offense, earning the reputation as the "Zen Master". Coaching a Bulls team led by Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and the infamous Dennis Rodman among others, Jackson became the team's most winningest head coach, and helped guide them to six NBA tittles, including two three-peats from 1991-'93 and '96-'98. After taking a year off at the end of the '98 season and vowing to never coach again, Jackson would return in '99, this time with the L.A. Lakers. With a different scenery having migrated to the Western Conference, the former NBA Coach of the Year wouldn't take long to adapt. In just his first year coaching in Hollywood, Jackson's Lakers would three-peat as NBA Champions from 2000-'02.

Jackson would once again retire from coaching, just days after losing his first ever NBA Finals series in 2004. But similar to his return in '99, the "Zen Master" would find himself back under the bright lights of Tinsel Town for the 2005-'06 NBA season. With his rehiring, Jackson would have to get used to coaching a Laker team without it's key big man in Shaquille O'neal. After missing out on the NBA Finals until 2008, Jackson would get his first taste of the long lived Lakers-Celtics rivalry. However, his team would be on the losing end, after just six games. L.A. would redeem themselves the following year by defeating the Orlando Magic, resulting in Jackson's 10th NBA tittle as a coach and 12th overall. With a record 10th tittle, Jackson surpassed the great Red Auerbach for the most Championships won as a head coach.

& Just one night after Kobe set the franchise record for most points all-time as a Laker, Jackson became the most winningest coach in franchise history with a win over the Charlotte Bobcats. With his 534th win as a Laker head coach, Jackson surpassed the previous mark of 533 wins held by Pat Riley. The 2009-'10 season is said to be Jackson's last at the throne of the Lakers head coach, but with the best record in the Western Conference and sole possession of first place, there's no telling what the future holds for the 'Master of Zen' if the Lakers just happen to repeat as World Champions this year. With Jeanie Buss under his arm, the chances of a return are always good.

Kobe Passes the Great Jerry West

Photobucket
Milestone Monday -
This past Monday, there were a number of milestones on hand to be surpassed and broken in the NBA, but none bigger than the one Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant was about to set. In the final game of the team's 8-game road trip, the Lakers made a visit to Memphis to take on a young and improving Grizzlies squad. The biggest headline heading into the game -- the Lakers all-time leading scoring record. With just 36-points shy of becoming the team's all-time leading scorer, Kobe Bryant would have a decision to make. Was he going to set the franchise record at Staples Center in front of the Lakers faithful, or on the road some 1,700 miles away from home? Granted the type of competitor and player Kobe is, it was almost unquestionable that the 12-time NBA All-Star was going to give it his all and treat the game like any other. & Sure enough, that's what happened.

With a 44-point performance in a loss to the Grizzlies, Kobe became the all-time leading scorer in Lakers history, surpassing 'Mr. Clutch' -- Jerry West. Ironically, Kobe set the mark against the team in which West currently works for, as the Grizzlies' general manager. After the game, West greeted and congratulated Bryant on his feat and later described Kobe as the greatest Laker ever. But he deserves just as much credit as anyone. After all, none of this could have happened if it weren't for Mr. West himself, who at the time was manager of the Lakers and pulled the trigger to acquire Bryant in a trade that would ship Vlade Divac to the Charlotte Hornets in return. Little did he know, he was getting the best player to ever wear the purple & gold in exchange. With the record now his, Kobe joins an elite group of Laker greats such as: Jerry West, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor among others.

It's incredible considering some of the players near the bottom of the list could easily be in the top 3 if not at no.1 on almost every other franchises' scoring list. But with the list, the Lakers' rich history continues to be built on, solidifying the franchise as one of the best in all of sports. With four rings already under his belt and an MVP trophy to show for, Kobe just adds to his resume, building a legacy similar to Michael Jordan's. But now that no.24 owns the Lakers' scoring record with 25,208+ pts., the team can now focus on bigger and better things - winning. In a post-game interview, Lakers forward-center Pau Gasol said "Now we can finally play team ball." Personally I don't see Pau's comments as a shot taken at Kobe, however I do see everyone including the media create a distraction out of the whole thing. A distraction that is now behind Kobe and company.

Rex Ryan Part II x Cancel the Invite

Photobucket
Prior to his team losing in the AFC Conference Championship, New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan was invited to the World's Famous Nathan's hot dog eating contest. The catch -- his team had to make it to the Superbowl. But now that his team has been eliminated, all chances of the rookie head coach going head to head with some of the most fierce competitive eaters can now be put to rest. As big of a publicity stunt the event would be, you would have to think the contest would draw twice as many fans and reel in just as much ratings if not more than a regular televised Jets game. & As exciting as it would be to see Ryan defeat Kobayashi and Joey Chestnut in their own game, it's almost a shame that now it'll never end up happening.

Whether or not it's a joke aimed at Ryan's weight, I'm sure he got a kick out of it given he's one of the biggest jokester's in all of football. Ryan has become a fan favorite not only because he's a rookie, but because his jesting personality lightens up those in the press conference. The man has made a memorable early coaching career out of saying some off the wall shit and surprising the league that his Jets are for real. But in my opinion, he has easily transformed from one of the more likable coaches in the league, to one of most annoying, within a matter of days. It's almost a daily thing to tune into SportsCenter to find out what Ryan has to say today. & After saying he'll be shocked if his Jets didn't win and beat the Colts, hopefully next season he'll learn to let his team do all the talking on the field instead of him doing it behind a podium.

If Ryan's mouth didn't get him into enough trouble already, his finger sure will. After being seen at a Strikeforce MMA event earlier this week in Miami, Ryan was seen giving the good 'ol bird to a number of heckling Dolphin fans. The picture made it not only on Sports channels and websites, but on the front cover of the New York Post. Ryan later apologized for his obscene gesture, but that didn't stop the NFL from fining him $50 thousand big ones. For some odd reason, I think this is only the beginning of Ryan's questionable antics as an NFL coach. With that being said, Rex deserves the award for the biggest character in the NFL for 2009.

Throwback Thursday x Kurt Warner

Photobucket
As we begin to wait for Brett Favre to announce whether he'll return or retire, Cardinals QB Kurt Warner makes it easy on us all and announces his retirement just days after his season ends. Warner, a 3-time league MVP announces his retirement just one season after leading the Arizona Cardinals to their first Superbowl appearance. Unlike other players who retire due to injury or lack of production, Warner chooses to retire and become a true family man. Warner who has seven kids, says he's looking forward to finally becoming a true father and spending time with his wife. As his family looks forward to his arrival at home, his team on the other hand will deeply miss his presence.

During his five seasons in Arizona, Warner helped resurrect a Cardinals team and led them to back-to-back NFC West division tittles for the first time in franchise history in '08 & '09 and the team's first ever Superbowl in 2008. The 38 year old QB did the same with the St. Louis Rams who he won a Superbowl with in 1999 against the Tennessee Titans. Warner's Rams made back-to-back Superbowl appearances by reclaiming the NFC Championship in 2000, but then lost to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. Warner threw for at least 100 touchdown passes with both teams (Rams & Cards), becoming only the second player in NFL history to do so. Fran Tarkenton was the first to reach the feat. With Warner's departure, he'll walk away from a second year option on his contract worth an estimated $4 million dollars.

Next on Warner's list you ask? The Hall of Fame. The 11-year veteran who started his pro football career in the Arena Football League owns a handful of trophies and records and could make for a strong debate to become a first ballot hall of famer. The former Superbowl MVP and 4-time Pro-Bowler will now make way for Cardinals QB Matt Leinart. Although many will miss the crafty veteran, I'm glad he'll no longer be in the same division as my team, hopefully making it easier for my 49ers to takeover the division and reclaim what's rightfully ours. Happy Trails Captain Kurt!

The Chronicles of Favre's Retirement, ACT III

Photobucket
To retire or not to retire, that is the question! -
Now that the Minnesota Vikings are officially eliminated from the Playoffs, the ongoing and never ending rumors of Brett Favre's possible retirement come into play. After Favre's Vikings failed at an attempt to book their trip to Miami for this year's Superbowl by losing to the New Orleans Saints, Favre told ESPN's Ed Werder "It's unlikely I'll return" when being asked how this game will effect his decision to play next year. Yeah, like we haven't heard that before. I refuse to fall for and believe anything that comes out of Brett's mouth regarding his retirement and I'm sure the world will agree with me. However, if Favre does decide to finally hang it up and live up to his words of retirement, it'll mean his legacy would end on an interception. Then again, that's been the case in all of his last 3 seasons.

Favre's final pass as a Packer, Jet and Viking have all resulted in interceptions and could possibly be the reason why he keeps coming back for more. It would be a sour ending to the long 18 year career Favre has had in the NFL and I know I wouldn't want my final pass to be a pick. But with the shots the 40 year old QB took in last Sunday's game against the Saints defense and for him to still return in the game after injuring his left leg, I don't think we'll ever see the end of number 4. & If he does decide to return for a 19th season, it's likely he'll make us wait on the edge of our seats and announce his return towards the end of training camp or just days before the regular season starts. Even though his team came short of Superbowl XLIV, Favre set playoff records for pass completions and passing yards. Both records that were previously held by the great Joe Montana. So sit back, relax and get a few tubs of pop-corn ready while Brett Favre gets set to lead us on another edition of journeying through his 'false retirements'.
