Niners Frostbitten by Bills in snowy Buffalo

Week 13 - Continuing their brutal two-game stretch of road games played in frigid temperatures, the (5-6) San Francisco 49ers would follow up their visit from the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field with a trip to the northeast for a date with the (9-2) Buffalo Bills. Facing yet another team coming off the Bye (that's four now for those of you keeping track at home), the 49ers would have their work cut out for them against arguably the best team in the AFC, not to mention playing in a snow game that required the help of those brave enough to shovel snow in and around the stadium in the hours leading up to kickoff. Offering $20 dollars an hour as well as hot meals and warm beverages, the Bills took to their social media account to rally as many shovelers as they could get with two feet of snow expected to fall come gameday. Unfortunately for the 49ers, the game's outcome would be as ugly as the conditions.

Despite getting quarterback Brock Purdy back under center after missing Week 12 with a shoulder injury sustained in Week 11 against Seattle, there wasn't a whole lot to write home about regarding the 49ers' offense on Sunday. And the defense wasn't any better as guys were slipping up and down the field virtually all game long. While the San Francisco defense was able to force a three and out on Buffalo's opening-drive which allowed the 49ers to strike first thanks to a Jake Moody field goal on their first possession, it was about the only point in the game that the defense came off the field on a high note. Leading 3-0 early, the San Francisco defense nearly forced a second consecutive three and out punt to begin the game, but an illegal contact penalty on cornerback Charvarius Ward who returned to action after missing the previous four games due to personal reasons, breathed new life into Buffalo's offense and were off to the races from there. Given a fresh set of downs, MVP candidate Josh Allen and company did the rest as the Bills orchestrated their first of three consecutive touchdown-scoring drives. A busy day on the ground for both teams, Bills backup running back Ray Davis scored the game's first touchdown with a 5-yard rush that sent Bills Mafia into a frenzy as snowballs were thrown up in the air in celebration.

Playing in less-than-ideal conditions to throw or kick a ball in, 49ers kicker Jake Moody learned firsthand just how difficult splitting the uprights would be in the snow, especially as the night progressed and conditions worsened. After drilling a 33-yard kick on his first field goal attempt before the heavier snowfall, Moody missed kicks from 45 and 55 yards out as San Francisco was unable to find the end zone in the first half. Making matters worse, running back Christian McCaffrey who had been the lone bright spot on the offense for the 49ers in the first half, would have to leave the game in the second quarter after falling to the ground with a lower body injury. With 53 yards on 7 rush attempts, McCaffrey was poised for a big performance before heading to the locker room where he would spend the rest of the night. Aided by a 65-yard touchdown run by Bills running back James Cook, Buffalo's longest TD run since 2016, both teams would surpass the 100-yard rushing mark by halftime, marking the first time in a game this season that two teams tallied more than 100 yards rushing in a first half (SF-108, BUF-141).

Trailing 21-3 at the half, the 49ers would see their fewest points scored in a first half since Week 18 of the 2021 season. Hoping to get off to a better start in the second half, the 49ers were trending in the right direction thanks to a big return of 60 yards from return man Deebo Samuel on the second half kickoff. Making their way to the 4-yard line, San Francisco's woes inside the red zone would rear their ugly head once again as fullback Kyle Juszczyk fumbled at the goal line, committing his first fumble since 2018 and a costly one at that. With Buffalo adding another touchdown, this time on a pass to receiver Amari Cooper who was bottled up before pitching a lateral back to a streaking Josh Allen along the sideline, the Bills' athletic quarterback dove across the goal line for the highlight worthy score. Having grown up a 49ers fan in nearby Firebaugh, California, Allen would be credited for both a touchdown pass and touchdown reception on the play, becoming just the fourth player in NFL history to have a receiving touchdown on a pass he threw.

San Francisco's lone touchdown of the game would come on a 15-yard run by rookie running back Isaac Guerendo. Receiver Jauan Jennings who made 3 receptions for a game-high 56-yards, helped setup the touchdown with a big 26-yard gain on 4th and 5 that led the Niners into the red zone and eventually the end zone. Trailing 28-10 at the start of the fourth quarter, any chance of a miracle comeback would be nullified rather quickly as San Francisco fumbled the ball away on each of their next two possessions. The first occurred on the first play of the fourth quarter as the ball slipped out of the hands of quarterback Brock Purdy as he reared back for a pass, almost like a wet bar of soap. The second would come on a fumbled kick return by Deebo Samuel after an 8-yard rushing touchdown by Josh Allen. Buffalo would attempt to cash in on a 49-yard Tyler Bass field goal following the Deebo fumble, but the elements again proved to be too much. The Bills would call upon backup QB Mitch Trubisky for the fourth quarter with the game well out of hand and the score 35-10 which would hold up as the final.

Two teams going in two different directions this season, the 49ers' loss was their third straight and while they're still technically alive in the NFC West, their playoff hopes are fading fast with each loss. Meanwhile, the Bills have now won an NFL-best seven consecutive games and appear to be the favorite in the AFC after clinching their fifth consecutive AFC East title and becoming the first team to clinch a division with five weeks remaining since the 2009 Colts. One of two teams with a takeaway in every game this season (Vikings the other), the Bills feasted on the many miscues committed by the Niners, including a total of three fumbles. Becoming the first QB in NFL history with a TD pass, TD rush & TD catch in a game, Josh Allen continued his MVP candidacy by throwing for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns compared to just 94 yards passing from Brock Purdy. 49er running backs combined to rush for 153 yards in the loss thanks to 78 yards from backup Jordan Mason and 53 from McCaffrey, but were still outgained on the ground by Buffalo's 220 rushing yards. Unfortunately, both Mason and McCaffrey would be placed on the Injured Reserve list on Monday due to a high ankle sprain and PCL injury respectively, likely ending McCaffrey's season.

Week 14 Preview: Following their brutal two-game stretch on the road where the Niners were outscored a combined 73-20, the team will return to their home digs of Levi's Stadium for a meeting with the (4-8) Chicago Bears. Coming off a Thanksgiving loss to the Detroit Lions, the Bears will take the field for the first time after the firing of head coach Matt Eberflus after 2+ seasons at the helm following a brutal mismanagement of the game clock in last week's loss, the first time in the team's 104-year history that they've fired a head coach mid-season. With interim head coach Thomas Brown now in the drivers seat for the Bears and rookie quarterback Caleb Williams coming off back to back stellar performances, the 49ers will try to get back on track with a win to help keep their playoff hopes alive. Like San Francisco who has dropped three straight, the Bears come into the Bay Area meeting having dropped six consecutive games.

While Chicago ranks 23rd in the league in scoring and 26th in total offense, they are 3rd overall in red zone scoring (66.67%) which is where the Niners will need to be sharp on defense on Sunday, especially if their offense continues to struggle the way it has as of late. At the top in red zone offense a season ago, the 49ers have struggled in the red zone all season long this year and currently rank 28th in the NFL with a 47.7 touchdown %. Not a good sign, especially considering the Bears have the No. 1 ranked red zone defense in all of football at 40.91%. Plenty has been said about the 49ers' defense that has been underperforming this season in multiple areas and some of that appears to be for good reason after recent developments. One of San Francisco's best players and vocal leaders is linebacker Fred Warner who revealed earlier in the week that he's been playing on a fractured ankle suffered in Week 4 against the Patriots. You can bet your bottom dollar that Warner will be out there again on Sunday, hoping to stop the bleeding as the Niners look to get back into the win column.

Shorthanded Niners no match for Pack

Week 12 - With only a handful of games remaining on the NFL's regular season schedule, things are getting dire for the (5-5) San Francisco 49ers who are toeing the line of must-win territory as they trail the Cardinals and sit tied with the Rams and Seahawks in a crowded NFC Western Division. However, the timing of these must-win games would be rather unfortunate for the Niners who took to the road on Sunday to kickoff the first leg of a tough two-game road trip against the (7-3) Green Bay Packers and (8-2) Buffalo Bills, two of the better teams in all of football. Making matters worse, Kyle Shanahan's 49ers would be without several key players including four Pro Bowlers in defensive-end Nick Bosa, left-tackle Trent Williams, cornerback Charvarius Ward and quarterback Brock Purdy. With Purdy missing practice during the week due to a sore shoulder, coach Shanahan announced backup QB Brandon Allen would be next in line to start, something he hadn't done since 2021 as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Making his first start in three years, Niner fans had a feeling Sunday's game would not be a pretty sight while going up against a hungry Green Bay team looking to avenge their playoff loss suffered at the hands of San Francisco a season ago. But nothing would prepare them for the lopsided struggle that ensued on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field. As bad as the Niners were on offense, their defense was even worse as they committed 10 missed tackles in the first quarter alone, and 15 in the first half, both the most by any team in the NFL this season. That number would climb to 19 missed tackles in total by the end of the game. It would be a forgetful day in all facets for the 49er defense as they saw their streak of 55 consecutive games without allowing a 100+ yard rusher come to an end, snapping the longest streak in the NFL since 1955. Green Bay's offense opened the game with a 15-play, 77-yard drive that ate up nearly seven and a half minutes, ending in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Packers QB Jordan Love to tight-end Tucker Kraft. Meanwhile, the 49ers punted on each of their first two drives and didn't convert a first down until midway thru the second quarter.

San Francisco also struggled with penalties on Sunday, committing nine penalties in total, including three first half penalties by rookie Dominic Puni who had committed only one penalty all season long entering Sunday. Trailing 17-0, the 49ers would finally piece together their first successful drive on offense, capped off by a 3-yard receiving touchdown by tight-end George Kittle. After missing last week's game with a hamstring injury, Kittle returned to the field picking up right where he left off by hauling in his league-leading 15th red zone reception and his eighth red zone touchdown on the season, the most in the NFL. The touchdown grab would also move Kittle into No. 3 on the franchise's all-time receptions list, giving him 507 career receptions, trailing only Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens. After a penalty-riddled first half, the 49ers received the ball to open the third quarter and appeared to have stolen some momentum after an 87-yard kick return by Deebo Samuel. But low and behold, a holding penalty would negate the potential game-shifting return. Instead of setting up shop at Green Bay's 8-yard line, San Francisco would be called back to their own 21-yard line and eventually turned the ball over on downs.

The 49er offense would cross midfield on their next possession, but a high pass into traffic intended for Samuel went over his head and into the hands of a Packers defender. Any chance of a fourth quarter comeback like the one they pulled off against Green Bay in the playoffs last season, went down the drain after fumbles on consecutive drives by the San Francisco offense. A strip-sack fumble on Brandon Allen and a rare miscue by running back Christian McCaffrey would result in a pair of touchdowns by the Packer offense which cashed in 21-points off San Francisco turnovers in total. As for the 49er defense, defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen's unit was unable to force any turnovers on Sunday with the exception of a late turnover on downs with just over a minute remaining in regulation. Packers QB Jordan Love entered Sunday's game having thrown at least one interception in every game this season, but steered clear against the Niners despite two near mistakes on dropped picks by San Francisco's Renardo Green and Ji'Ayir Brown.

While San Francisco's struggles inside the red zone are well documented this season, Green Bay has been equally as bad this year and ranked 27th in red zone percentage entering Sunday. However, they converted 4-for-4 in red zone trips against the Niners, including three rushing touchdowns by running back Josh Jacobs, his third career 3 touchdown game. Jacobs entered Sunday's meeting red-hot with 90+ scrimmage yards in six straight games, tied for the longest active streak in the NFL and third in the league in rushing with 838 yards. He kept that streak alive with a busy 106-yard performance, helping Green Bay score a season-high 38-points as the 49ers lost, 38-10. In the rivalry which spans 74 games between the two teams, the 28-point loss for San Francisco would mark their largest loss in the series' history. 49ers QB Brandon Allen did outproduce Jordan Love in passing yards: 199 to 163 but tallied only 1 touchdown and two turnovers compared to Love's 2 touchdowns and no turnovers. George Kittle led all receivers with 82 yards and a receiving touchdown on a game-high six receptions.

Unfortunately for San Francisco, the loss would result in a dramatic drop in their playoff probability, dropping their playoff hopes from 46% had they won on Sunday, compared to just 15% with the loss. The 31% differential in win from loss is the largest in the NFL this week.

Week 13 Preview - After falling to 5-6 on the season, the 49ers will have another tough one on Sunday when they take a trip to the northeast for a date with the (9-2) Buffalo Bills. With snow expected in the forecast and the elements likely to play a factor, the Niners will need a much better performance on the ground from Christian McCaffrey and company, especially after San Francisco was outgained 169 to 44 in rushing yards in Week 12 against the Packers. They'll also need a much cleaner game on defense against Bills quarterback Josh Allen who is currently in the MVP discussion as Buffalo trails only the (10-1) Kansas City Chiefs who they recently defeated for the top seed in the AFC. San Francisco's playoff hopes are fading fast, but if anything can catapult them back into the discussion it would be a road win against a stout Bills team that has won six straight and is undefeated at home this season (5-0). It's not exactly clear whether or not Brock Purdy will return on Sunday as he continues to battle shoulder soreness which has kept him limited at practice up to this point. If not, another tough day at the office could be in store for backup Brandon Allen.

The 49ers did receive some good news on the injury front as linebacker Dre Greenlaw who's been out all season with a torn Achilles suffered on the sideline during February's Super Bowl, is expected to join team practices this week in a limited role before returning to game action in the coming weeks. San Francisco's defense has been nowhere near as dominant as they were a season ago and a lot of that can be attributed to the absence of Greenlaw who when healthy, provides arguably the best 1-2 punch at linebacker in all of football with Fred Warner.

49ers No Match for Bills on Monday Night

Week 13 - Riding high after an uplifting victory on the road against a division rival, the San Francisco 49ers (5-6) were in prime position to right the ship and improve their record to .500 on the year, while also receiving some help in the division as both the Seahawks and Cardinals suffered losses. However, what was supposed to be a home game on Monday Night Football for the 49ers at Levi's Stadium, would instead take place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, home of the Arizona Cardinals. Hoping to still make themselves at home, their Week 13 opponent would be the 8-3 Buffalo Bills who had other plans. While the 49ers have yet to play at State Farm Stadium this season to take on the division rival Cardinals, the Bills would be making their second trip to the desert this season and playing in a stadium that would bring back bad memories of a heartbreaking loss that took place just three weeks earlier. Anxious to avenge that loss at the hands of Arizona which came on the final play of the game, the team that stood in front of them on Monday night did not matter as quarterback Josh Allen and company would not hesitate to take it out on a short-handed 49ers team.

Having grown up attending 49er games at the now demolished Candlestick Park and a native of Firebaugh, California, Allen's homecoming wishes of facing the 49ers in the Bay Area for the first time, were cancelled due to the strict restrictions put in place by Santa Clara County where the 49ers' new stadium lies, which has banned the play of contact sports for at least the next few weeks. But that wouldn't stop the Bills QB from having a coming out party on primetime television. Seeking their first win on Monday Night Football since 1999, Buffalo came out guns blazing on offense as San Francisco won the coin-toss and elected to differ. Moving the ball with ease, the Bills setup shop inside the red zone before being stood up at the goal-line by the 49er defense after a gutsy decision to go for it on 4th and goal. Taking over at their own 2-yard line, the San Francisco offense would also march their way to their opponents goal-line before being denied at the doorstep and held scoreless. The Niners would be gifted a second opportunity on the very next play as a bobbled handoff exchange from Allen to his running back ended up in the hands of San Francisco's Fred Warner. Though it would take them until third down, the 49ers would finally punch it into the end zone when QB Nick Mullens found rookie receiver Brandon Aiyuk for the 2-yard touchdown.

If there was anything the 49ers' touchdown did other than give San Francisco the lead, it was anger Allen and the Bills offense which went on a scoring surge of their own by orchestrating six consecutive scoring drives. Highlighting a first half which saw Buffalo take a 17-7 lead into the locker room, the 49ers were left clueless when trying to find an answer for slot receiver Cole Beasley who had a career-high in receiving yards by halftime before finishing with a game-high 130 yards and a touchdown on 9 receptions. While the 49ers did open the second half with a field goal to make it a one-score game, Buffalo answered with a touchdown to maintain their distance. The 49er defense suffered a mental breakdown when defensive-lineman Kentavius Street was called for a roughing the passer penalty that turned a would-be 3rd & 18 into an automatic first down. Making matters worse, the Bills would find the end zone two plays later. Looking to string together consecutive scoring drives of their own, San Francisco would do no such thing as Nick Mullens had his pass intercepted as Aiyuk was unable to come up with the grab which he bobbled into the hands of a Buffalo defender.

After another Bills field goal, the Niners finally struck pay dirt in the second half as a 49-yard reception by Aiyuk setup fullback Kyle Juszczyk who hauled in a touchdown reception from 6-yards out. A fourth and final Bills touchdown would make it a 34-17 ballgame with the 49ers in desperate need of a touchdown-scoring drive. They would march all the way to the red zone inside the 5-yardline before Mullens was intercepted for a second time on the evening when his pass was pried out of the hands of running back Jeff Wilson Jr. who collided with Buffalo's Tre'Davious White as he came away with the ball. After finally forcing a Bills punt, the 49ers were able to score with a garbage-time touchdown in the final minute when Mullens connected in the end zone with tight-end Jordan Reed. Falling by a final score of 34-24, the 49ers were unable to capitalize on the losses of several teams vying for Wild Card spots in the NFC playoff picture. As for the Bills who will accomplish back to back winning seasons for the first time since 1998-99 under the tutelage of head coach Sean McDermott, Buffalo won their first Monday Night Football game of the century behind a fabulous performance from QB Josh Allen.

Becoming the first Bills QB to complete 80% of his passes while tossing 4 TD's in a game, Allen completed 32 of 40 pass attempts for 375 yards and 0 interceptions, meanwhile his counterpart Nick Mullens threw for 316 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions on 26 of 39 attempts. Aside from the aforementioned Cole Beasley who had a career-game receiving, wide-out Stefon Diggs also had a big night in the Buffalo receiving department, hauling in game-high 10 catches for 92 yards. Rookie Brandon Aiyuk led the way for San Francisco, catching five balls for 95 yards and a touchdown. Neither team had a monstrous game on the ground as Devin Singletary totted the rock 18 times for 61 yards for Buffalo, while both Jeff Wilson Jr. and Raheem Mostert shared the 49ers' workload to rush for 47 and 42 yards, respectively.

Week 14 Preview - Continuing their stay at their home away from home in Glendale, Arizona, the 49ers (5-7) will play host to the Washington Football Team (5-7) in Week 14. Setting up a date against former 49er QB and first overall pick Alex Smith, Washington is riding high after handing the Pittsburgh Steelers their first loss of the season which took place earlier on Monday before the Niners faced the Bills. In what was their first win over Pittsburgh since 1991, the Washington Football Team has been playing inspiring football as of late after long journeys by both Smith who suffered a gruesome leg injury two seasons prior which almost cost him his leg, and head coach Ron Rivera who has had his own battle with cancer. Any thought of an easy game the 49ers had against Washington several weeks ago, can now be thrown out the window as San Francisco will need to bring their a-game if they want to get back in the win column. One way they can avoid another loss, although easier said than done, is by steering clear of the turnovers as the Monday night loss saw San Francisco commit at least two turnovers for the sixth consecutive game, their longest streak since 2008. If they're unable to do that and unable to hand Washington a loss, they can all but kiss their playoff hopes goodbye.

49ers Beat L.A., Complete Season Sweep of Rams

Week 12 - Coming off their BYE Week in Week 11, the San Francisco 49ers (4-6) got some much needed reinforcements as Deebo Samuel, Raheem Mostert and Richard Sherman all returned to the starting lineup after all missing extensive time as the Niners took a trip down south to face the division rival Los Angeles Rams (7-3). In a rematch of the Week 6 meeting which saw the Niners have their way with the Rams at Levi's Stadium, Los Angeles who entered Sunday in a tie for the division lead out west and a perfect record of 4-0 in their new multi-billion dollar stadium, was hoping some home cooking would do the trick in round two. Instead, Kyle Shanahan's 49ers would get the best of his old pal and former colleague Sean McVay who's Rams fell at the hands of San Francisco for a second time this season and for the fourth time in as many tries.

Since their Week 6 meeting, both teams have gone in opposite directions with the 49ers winning only one of four games and the Rams winning three of four. But as usual, strange things tend to happen when division rivals meet which was once again the case on Sunday. In what was a lackluster first half by both teams which featured a combined four first quarter turnovers and a total of five in the first half, each team struggled on offense as the defenses took centerstage. Making their presence felt early on, the aforementioned trio of Samuel, Mostert and Sherman each made a difference in the game's opening quarter. After a San Francisco three and out to open the game, the 49ers pounced on a Malcolm Brown fumble in enemy territory, but were unable to do anything with it as Niners QB Nick Mullens had his pass tipped into the air by defensive stalwart Aaron Donald and intercepted by the Rams defense. L.A. would strike first on a 48-yard field goal by Matt Gay, but the lead would be short-lived as the San Francisco offense wasted little time to answer with a score of their own. Thanks to receptions of 33 and 26 yards by Deebo Samuel, Raheem Mostert was able to put the Niners on the board and into the lead with an 8-yard touchdown.

Seeing his first live action on the field since suffering a calf injury in Week 1, cornerback Richard Sherman provided a jolt on defense with his first interception of the season on an errant pass from Rams quarterback Jared Goff. Happy to have Sherman back in the lineup, the 49er defense didn't have long to celebrate the return of their veteran leader as the offense gave the ball right back one play later when backup running back Jeff Wilson Jr. fumbled the ball away. With both teams combining to exchange six consecutive punts, the 49ers would get another chance at adding some points on the scoreboard just before the half when the defense forced a fumble on the quarterback. But a 50-yard field goal attempt in the final seconds of the first half by 49ers kicker Robbie Gould would end up wide-right as San Francisco was forced to settle for their 7-3 halftime lead. With the Rams owning the best second half defense in the league, the 49ers knew they'd have to do much better than scoring only seven points in the second half if they wanted to escape L.A. with a victory. Two plays into the third quarter, San Francisco would get some much needed help on the scoreboard thanks to their defense as Goff was pressured in the pocket and threw a pass that was intercepted and taken to the house by rookie Javon Kinlaw, the first of his career.

With another field goal at the 4:35 mark in the third quarter, the 49ers jumped out to a 17-3 lead. But things would begin to go sour as the Rams found themselves right back in it after a field goal and a fumble returned for a touchdown as L.A. scored 10-points in six seconds. Following a 49ers three and out, Rams rookie running back Cam Akers began to steal the show as he broke for a 61-yard run on L.A.'s first play of the drive before finding the end zone from a yard out just two plays later. Quickly erasing San Francisco's 17-3 lead, the Rams suddenly found themselves ahead, 20-17 at the start of the 4th quarter. After both teams exchanged punts, the 49ers would tie things up at 20-all thanks to Robbie Gould's 44-yard field goal with 3:15 remaining in regulation. Needing a stop on defense, the 49ers would get just that with 2:10 remaining. Facing a 3rd and 2, Nick Mullens connected with Deebo Samuel on a 24-yard gain that put them across midfield. Inching closer to victory with a series of short passes and runs, the 49ers were ready to put the game in the hands of Robbie Gould who was setting up for a 47-yard field goal to win it. Instead, he would receive a gift in the form of a 5-yard penalty on L.A.'s Jalen Ramsey who was whistled for offsides. Making things easier for the former Pro Bowl kicker, Gould split the uprights from 41-yards out for the game-winning field goal. With the 23-20 victory, the 49ers completed the season sweep of the Rams and improved to 5-6 on the year, while also dealing a blow to the Rams who fell to second place in the NFC West with the loss.

While it wasn't a pretty win by any stretch of the imagination, the 49ers still managed to get the job done, mainly with their makeshift defense which forced the Rams to punt a total of seven times, the most punts by L.A. this season. Continuing their recent dominance of the Rams, the 49ers are now 5-3 against L.A. since 2017. An impressive record considering no other team has defeated the Rams more than twice in that span. While neither quarterback put up gaudy numbers on the stat sheet as Nick Mullens and Jared Goff threw for 252 and 198 yards respectively, one player who did outshine the rest on offense was receiver Deebo Samuel who caught a game-high 11 passes for 133 yards in his first game back after missing the previous three games with a hamstring injury. Most impressive: 83 of Deebo's 133 yards occurred after contact which are the most yards after contact by a wide-receiver in a game this season.

Week 13 Preview - As if the 49ers haven't had enough issues to deal with this season with the countless amount of injuries and multiple failed Covid tests, the team is now being forced to play their next two home games elsewhere due to new Covid-related restrictions in Santa Clara County. The strict regulations which prohibit any and all contact sports for the next three weeks, were learned about on Saturday while the team was traveling to L.A. to face the Rams. Luckily, it was another division rival of the 49ers who were kind enough to lend a helping hand as Kyle Shanahan's team will be hosting each of their next two home games in the desert at State Farm Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals. First up in the 49ers' new home away from home will be a tough assignment against the first-place Buffalo Bills (8-3) on Monday Night Football. Sitting atop the standings in the AFC East, Buffalo is coming off a 27-17 victory against the Los Angeles Chargers and will be anxious to try and avenge a loss just two weeks earlier in the same building when the Cardinals won on a last-second desperation touchdown pass from Arizona's Kyler Murray to DeAndre Hopkins. At 5-6 on the year, the 49ers are still hanging onto a sliver of hope in the playoff hunt and would benefit tremendously with a win against one of the AFC's best and will welcome any help they can get from team's facing those in their division.

Bills run wild vs Depleted 49er Defense

Week 6 - Heading into Buffalo to take on the (3-2) Bills in Week 6, the 49ers were hoping a shake up at the Quarterback position would help them reach the win column for the first time since Week 1. And while Colin Kaepernick did provide a jolt and show flashes at times on offense, the lackluster defense would once again fail to contain the opposition as Buffalo's LeSean McCoy ran amok against his former head coach in Philadelphia. 49ers head coach Chip Kelly knows McCoy very well as their distaste for one another was well publicized while with the Eagles, but Kelly was left helpless on the sideline as he watched McCoy shred the 49ers depleted secondary to the tune of three rushing touchdowns on the afternoon to tie a career-high.

Entering the game with the worst passing offense in the league, Buffalo didn't need to do much through the air as they utilized their rushing attack that couldn't be stopped, eclipsing over 300 yards on the ground in total. To put the disastrous performance into perspective, the 312 rushing yards allowed by San Francisco would be their most since 1958. But before the Bills began their scoring frenzy in the second half, it was the 49ers who struck first and provided most of the big plays in the first half. On Buffalo's first offensive possession, we finally saw our first true highlight of former Oregon Duck teammates Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner who combined for a forced and recovered fumble as Armstead provided the hit on Bills QB Tyrod Taylor and Buckner recovered. It would be the first of three forced fumbles by the 49ers defense, two of which were recovered. But unfortunately, the offense was unable to do much with them, with only a field goal to show for as Phil Dawson gave his team an early 3-0 lead. The Bills would answer with their first of six touchdowns on the afternoon as McCoy struck paydirt to take a 7-3 lead in the first.
Making his first start of the season and throwing his first pass in a meaningful game in over a year, Colin Kaepernick showed signs of rust but was able to dust off the cobwebs at times, connecting for a 53-yard touchdown to a wide-open Torrey Smith to start off the second quarter. Though he was unable to connect with Smith in stride and slightly underthrew him, Smith stopped for the grab before breaking away for the easy score which put San Francisco back on top at 10-7. It would be the last lead of the afternoon that they would enjoy as another pair of Phil Dawson field goals was all they would show for the rest of the way. With Buffalo hanging on to a 16-13 lead at the half, both teams would struggle to get anything going early on in the third quarter before the Bills stringed together four consecutive touchdown scoring drives to blow the game open. With over 100 yards rushing in the first half alone, McCoy finished the game with 140 yards on the ground to go with his trio of touchdowns after shaking off an apparent knee injury late in the first half which sidelined him for Buffalo's following drive. He would appear to be just fine as the Bills ran away with a 45-16 victory to claim their first four game winning-streak since opening the 2008 season 4-0. As for the Niners, they would drop their fifth consecutive game, their first such streak in six years.

Kaepernick and Taylor finished with nearly identical stat lines with Kaepernick holding a slight edge with 187 yards thru the air and another 66 on the ground compared to Taylor's 179 and 68. But with Taylor completing three more passes than Kaepernick on four fewer tries, it was obvious which quarterback has been starting all season and which one has been sidelined. But with this game to build on, Kaepernick should see his comfort level and rhythm rise going forward. Another positive to take from the beating was receiver Torrey Smith getting involved in the offense once again as he was merely forgotten about with Gabbert under center. Meanwhile, the exact opposite could be said for Jeremy Kerley who only caught two passes for 12 yards on Sunday. This after having hauled in over 85-yards and a touchdown in each of his last two games with Gabbert as the QB. If Kaep can get all parties involved, we could see the Niners passing game take a huge leap forward sooner than later.
Week 7 Preview - With running back Carlos Hyde ruled out for Week 7 with a shoulder injury, the (1-5) 49ers will be shorthanded on offense when they try to put an end to their 5-game skid as they return home to host the (2-3) Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Another pair of play makers that might not join the 49ers on Sunday and were limited in practice are receiver Torrey Smith (back) and standout rookie cornerback Rashard Robinson (concussion). Needing as much help as they can get, Chip Kelly's 49ers will be facing a well rested Bucs team that is coming off a BYE and last played on Monday Night Football on October 10 as they defeated the struggling Carolina Panthers. Getting their first glimpse of last year's first overall pick and reigning NFL Rookie of the Year Jameis Winston, the 49ers will hope to bounce back from another disappointing performance on defense to head into their Week 8 BYE on a positive note with a win.

Week 5: 49ers win another blowout, Bully Bills 45-3

After a dominant shutout victory on the road last week versus the New York Jets, the 49ers would duplicate their blowout performance on Sunday at home in a much cleaner fashion with a record-setting performance from the San Francisco offense. Hosting the Buffalo Bills, Alex Smith and company would string together arguably the best overall performance on offense in 49ers franchise history. Despite the 49ers' rich history, Sunday marked the first time ever that the team compiled over 600-yards of offense, finishing with a franchise-record 621 total yards, something that even all-time greats Joe Montana and Steve Young were unable to accomplish. San Francisco's offensive onslaught was also the most yards ever allowed by a Buffalo Bills team, surpassing the previous total of 598-yards which was also against the 49ers in 1992 and just so happened to be their largest amount prior to Sunday.

Sunday's game was a game of firsts as 49ers QB Alex Smith threw for a career-high 237-yards in the first half before finishing with 303-yards on the day. Smith, Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter, Colin Kaepernick, Anthony Dixon, Bruce Miller and Kyle Williams all contributed in the run game to total 311 yards rushing, making this the first 49ers team ever with 300 yards passing and 300 yards rushing. While Frank Gore led the way with 106-yards on the ground, both Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis eclipsed the century mark through the air with over 100 yards receiving. Crabtree, Kyle Williams and Mario Manningham all caught touchdown passes from Smith, with Gore, Dixon and Kaepernick all scoring on runs, including Kaepernick's second touchdown run in as many weeks.
The game wouldn't all be about offense, however, as the 49ers defense stepped up and did its part by forcing two turnovers including one fumble and one interception. Meanwhile, San Francisco's only blemish came on a Colin Kaepernick fumble during the first half. Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick who coming into the game led the league in touchdowns with 12, was unable to get anything going against the stingy 49ers D which held the Harvard alum to only 126 yards through the air and no touchdowns. Buffalo's run game which has also been among the league's best was also kept quiet as C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson combined for only 53-yards rushing. The rest of the game would be smooth sailing as Buffalo's lone field goal came in the second quarter which at the time tied the game at three. After striking first in the first quarter with a David Akers field goal, the 49ers never looked back, scoring 42-unanswered points before going on to win, 45-3 and improving to 4-1 on the year.

Preview & Prediction: Week 6 will see the 49ers get set to face off against the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants in a rematch of last year's NFC title game. Tied for first place in the NFC East, the 3-2 Giants are coming off a 41-27 triumph at home against the Cleveland Browns. With Eli Manning under center for the G-Men and playing just as well as anybody, at first glance I'd expect this game to come down to the wire just like it did the last two times these teams met. But coach Harbaugh who is saying Alex Smith's sprained finger on his non throwing-arm is "very much a concern" can make this game a lot more interesting if he chooses to give backup QB Colin Kaepernick more snaps than usual. Regardless of what coach Harbaugh does at quarterback, I still like the 49ers at home coming off of back-to-back blowout wins and expect them to improve to 5-1 on the year with a 24-20 victory.

No Batman & Robin in Cincy

Photobucket
Continuing the surprisingly busy early offseason, numerous trades and acquisitions have taken place. But one of the biggest headlines, is what could have been done, but wasn't. After the Buffalo Bills expressed their decision to not offer wide-out Terrell Owens a contract to return for next season, the media went into a craze, with rumors of Owens possibly landing in either Cincinnati or Baltimore. But now, both destinations are just about out of the question. While the Ravens decided to trade for Arizona's Anquan Boldin, the Bengals decided to take a much younger approach by signing free agent and former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Antonio Bryant. With the contract Owens seeks and the role he expects to play in, Boldin's signing pretty much cancels any chance of Owens becoming a Raven.

In Cincy, prior to Bryant's signing with the team, T.O. was scheduled to visit with Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis for dinner. But just hours before the two were expected met, Owens was informed that the club instead found its man with Antonio Bryant, sending T.O on a flight back home to Atlanta. As much as the world wanted to see T.O. donning the black and orange stripes, no man wanted to see the 6-time Pro Bowler with the Bengals more than Chad Ochocinco. With the Bills not offering Owens a contract, the thought of having Ocho and T.O. alongside one another made for a perfect story. Even #85 thought so, by making public via twitter. "Man it don't take that damn long to sign on the dotted line, lets go dammit!!! You can be Batman i will be Robin, lets go!!" My favorite part of the discussion, was what Ocho said later, "Oh and Carson is gonna be ALFRED."

With T.O. stuck on the outside looking in, little interest has been shown thus far, as no team wants a drama queen on their team, nor are they willing to dish out big bucks for a 36-year old veteran who is coming off of his worse year since 1999 when he played for the 49ers. Owens played his one and only year in Buffalo last season finishing with a lackluster total of 829 yards and 5 touchdowns. But will the slim interest in one of the game's best wide receivers of all-time force him to retire and hang it up once and for all? Personally I don't think so, but things can't be looking too promising in the eyes of T.O. right now.

N.O. catches for T.O.

Photobucket

Heading into Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints, Bills star wide-receiver Terrell Owens had a streak of 185-games where he caught at least one ball. However that streak came to end as T.O. was held without a reception for the first time since his rookie year in 1996 with the San Francisco 49ers. The streak was also the longest of any active player and third longest in NFL history only behind Marvin Harrison who's stuck on 190 and the great Jerry Rice who had 274 consecutive games with a catch. To add to the snapped streak, the Bills lost the game 27 to 7 on their own turf.

Owens was thrown to a total of 5 times but was either over thrown or failed to make the reception. After the game, Owens was pounded by the media with questions regarding him and the play-calling. Those questions were all answered the same as T.O. repeatedly said "I'm going with the plays that are called." But it's only a matter of time before #81 begins pointing the finger. He knows he needs the ball in order to help this team succeed offensively and he's not the only one that agrees. The man behind the headset -- head coach Dick Jauron said "Owens is clearly a big part of the teams offense and that the ball needs to get to both him and teammate Lee Evans."

So far this year, Terrell has generated only 5 catches for 98 yards and 1 touchdown as a Bill. It's clear that T.O. is already unhappy in Buffalo after only his first 3-weeks with the team, but it's nice to see he refuses to fall into the trap of the media and play their silly mind games, as they would only make matters worse. Many think the media was a little harsh to Owens, as others think he was given a bit of his own medicine. You be the judge...
